Modelling of migration of toxic compounds and breakdown products (WP4)

Objectives

The main objective of WP4 is to analyse thoroughly physical processes that control propagation of toxic compounds (TC) in the bottom sediments – seawater system and develop a 3D numerical model capable to forecast TC migrations. Following physical processes are to be addressed:

  • Deep-water circulation in the Baltic sea and adjacent part of the North Sea its mesoscale variability related to inter-basins exchange and inflow events;
  • Formation of subsurface mesoscale cyclonic eddies with inflow events and its role in deep water ventilation;
  • Vertical (diapycnal) mixing due to small-scale turbulence;
  • Horizontal (isopycnal) mixing due to mesoscale eddies;
  • Combined (isopycnal and diapycnal) mixing due to double-diffusive and baroclinic interleaving;
  • Re-suspension of bottom sediments due to bottom boundary layer turbulence
  • Sedimentation of suspended matter due to settling velocity.
